We had a patient who was deathly afraid of needles. She needed blood work and was already super anxious, and had stalled on getting the necessary blood work that the doctor ordered. Between Carra and me, we were trying to assure the patient that everything would be fine, that the lab techs know what they are doing and are highly skilled at their job, and that it would be over before she knew it. I helped hold the patient's arm straight for the lab tech, and Carra, without being prompted, held the patient in a warm embrace and comforted her like you would a child who had fallen down and gotten hurt, and spoke the kindest words to her and made her so distracted and comfortable that the blood work got done easy peasy. The patient was crying and nearly hysterical leading up to the blood work, but when Carra just wrapped her arms around her and held her and comforted her, it was the sweetest, most warm touch a nurse could ever demonstrate, and I felt it was exceptional in that moment. She is a true caregiver at heart and knows what to do when the moment is compelling her to do it!
