The absolute most crucial thing she did was listen. She did more for my mental health and my husband's than I could ever imagine.
My daughter was diagnosed with AMC Leukemia and in the early hours of the following day, we arrived on Ward E39. The first Nurse we had was Carrie and from the very beginning, she was amazing. I was very emotional in the first few days and on day one, Carrie allowed my husband onto the ward so we could be together. She explained the process to us both and gave us a tour of the ward. She built a strong relationship with both myself and my husband. She quickly became our go-to Nurse. Her level of knowledge and compassion is so dear. She was with us when we received our initial diagnosis and was always on hand to answer any questions. She escorted us to MRI scans and a few failed CT scans - she patiently waited whilst my "sedated" child drunkenly rolled around on a hospital bed! She has also helped me weather tantrums. But the absolute most crucial thing she did was listen. She did more for my mental health and my husband's than I could ever imagine. She was a Nurse first, and a counsellor second. Even now, she comes to see us and check up on our girl when she isn't our Nurse. We will be here for a long time and she makes that so much easier by being here as well. She is so good with all the kids and parents on the ward, and she obviously enjoys what she does, which suits us because she is amazing at what she does! If I ever have questions about my daughter's treatment, I know she will always have the answers, along with the best routes to cycle to the hospital!
