As a breast cancer survivor, I have had several occasions to utilize One Day Surgery during the past 3 years. Time is short there and only encompasses several hours. During my most recent visit, I had the opportunity to be cared for post-operatively by a very exceptional Nurse, Carrie Parker RN. She made every minute count that we shared together. Carrie was very personable, warm, efficient, and friendly. She has a calming, wonderful bedside manner. She did not rush me, always explaining what was going to happen next. She was thorough: completed her paperwork, changed my dressings which were oozing, and even provided me with reinforcements to take home. After discontinuing my IV and helping me get dressed, she reacted quickly when I bled from the IV site and soiled my jacket. Oh my, she felt bad about that!
As we were reviewing post-operative orders, I was standing and became hot and clammy. Carrie picked up on that immediately, had me sit down, and continued to fan me with her papers as she talked. I felt a bit nauseated for a brief moment but then was okay. We proceeded as she placed me in the wheelchair. She gave me a basin in case I got sick and even placed a cool washcloth on my neck.
Carrie obviously enjoys her job and is very good at it. When asked, she told us a little about herself and how she enjoys floating between Post-Op and Pre-Op Surgery.
Carrie made quite an impression on both my husband and myself during this brief time (approximately 3 hours). Kudos to Carrie for being a great nurse!
