The situation could have had a negative outcome if they did not respond the way that they did.
We received a patient from specials that had a Uterine artery embolization. The patient currently has cervical cancer and is here for excessive vaginal bleeding. The GYN Oncology physician removed the packing from the patient and then left the floor after visiting with the patient. Shortly after the removal of the packing the patient started hemorrhaging again. The bleeding was so excessive that a rapid response was activated, and the MD was called urgently. The MD said he was now 25 minutes away, and for some reason, our Rapid response team took a lot longer than usual to arrive. In the meantime, I called Caryn Freytag in LDRP and asked if she could urgently bring a speculum while we were waiting for MD to arrive. Not only did Caryn arrive before our own rapid team with the speculum, but she brought help. Caryn knew this patient needed to be seen immediately and called for an OBGYN to come assist. The three of them gloved up and helped give this patient immediate care and intervention in an emergent situation. They didn’t just drop the speculum and leave; they helped us until the patient was stable and the primary MD arrived. The situation could have had a negative outcome if they did not respond the way that they did. I was so thankful for their help. Times like this make me proud of the team and culture that we have at Baptist South. We always hear about the negatives, but these nurses and doctor deserve recognition. Thank you, Caryn, for all you do for our patients, families, and team members!
