Recently my brother was hospitalized on Gagnon 1 where he was hoping to be cleared to get an LVAD pump. Unfortunately, because of his kidney function, he was declined. He was very disappointed and angry. He was also overwhelmed when the discussion turned to heart and kidney transplants. When he was discharged, he kept saying Casandra was great; she helped me a lot. I asked him what made her great. He said she listened to me. By listening she validated his feelings, decreasing his anxiety. Casandra also explained and helped him process the complexities of the situation. I was not able to pick him up until after 7:00 pm and she waited past the end of her shift to ensure proper discharge instructions to his caregiver. We have come to expect excellence in nursing care at Morristown, but the compassion and humanity of Casandra were much more important that day.
