I was admitted via A&E after being sent by my GP. I had assumed I would have a scan on my swollen neck and be discharged with medication so it was a shock to be admitted.
My husband had not been able to stay with me due to COVID-19 restrictions and the hospital was not able to allow visitors. I hadn't been able to explain the situation to my children and the only communication I could have was by phone when I felt lucid enough to talk.
I was diagnosed with Lemierres Syndrome which meant I had a blood clot in my neck and my brain and was on morphine which made me quite sleepy. I met my husband 30 years ago and we had never spent more than a couple of days apart. The staff as a team understood how much I missed them.
On Saturday, my husband was completing one of his trips to bring me fresh clothes etc. Casey was at my bedside when another nurse arrived to bring my fresh supplies and asked if I had a bag to give to my husband in return. Casey asked if I wanted to see him and helped me walk to the entrance of the ward. She explained that I would have to stand back from the door and explained to my husband that he would have to do the same. We stood about 10ft apart and my daughter who is 12 years old was there too. I was able to tell them I loved them and they were able to tell me too.
My husband said to me afterward that while my daughter had been emotional, she had told him that she was happy to have seen because she now knew I wasn't going to die.
The humanity Casey showed me, knowing that was what I needed was unbelievable and I will never forget it. Everyone I tell about it ends up in tears.
