Casey was extremely compassionate to this individual, making sure she had just what she needed during chemotherapy infusions.
Casey is extremely dedicated to providing excellent patient care daily. Working in Oncology, nurses can be challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. Casey never hesitates to take on the challenge and her attention to detail in navigating patients from start to finish in their cancer treatment is notable.

I would like to share a recent patient encounter that exemplified Casey’s compassion towards her patients. Casey briefly met with the patient after she came to our clinic to see our Oncologist for her first visit, the patient was diagnosed with start IV breast cancer and was to start a chemotherapy regimen as soon as possible.

The following circumstances made it extremely difficult to treat this patient: The patient was essentially homeless and lived on the outskirts of town in “the woods.” The patient did not have a phone or any way of contacting her. The patient tested positive for amphetamines. The patient needed to have a port placed and was unreachable, so social services had to deliver a phone to her location. The patient did not always show up for scheduled appointments which extended her course of treatment.

Casey’s ability to advocate for this challenging patient is what makes her a DAISY Nurse. Casey spent much of her time trying to get ahold of the patient to notify her of labs or tests due as well as making sure she knew of her upcoming appointments. She was extremely compassionate to this individual, making sure she had just what she needed during chemotherapy infusions.

When it seemed impossible to reach this patient to get her the treatment she needed, Casey arose to the challenge skillfully and graciously. I am happy to report that this patient has finished her chemotherapy regimen and was extremely tearful on her last day as Casey had made a lasting bond in the patient’s heart. She continues to stop by the clinic to just say hi!

This is one of the many examples of Casey’s ability to impact patients' lives during their most vulnerable times.

The following is another notable example, we had a long-time patient who was very fond of Casey (much like many of our patients) throughout her treatment Casey was her main nurse. Casey always found a way to brighten her and her husband’s day and put smiles on their faces. Unfortunately, this patient had unexpectedly passed away, the very next day her grieving husband presented himself to the clinic with tears in his eyes to see Casey. This speaks volumes to just how much Casey touches our patients and their family’s lives.

It's not unusual to hear patients ask for Casey, see the way they light up when she is here, or my personal favorite, we hear “oh, there’s my girl!” Casey is so much more than a nurse to our patients, she is someone they can count on to make sure they are receiving the absolute best care possible. Casey takes pride in what she does and shows compassion every single day. We are proud and lucky to have Casey in our department, she is a true DAISY Nurse!
