Cassie responded to a patient who was complaining of new symptoms at discharge with the critical eye that was needed to differentiate the sepsis, which would soon be the septic shock, from the malingering that this patient had been known to exhibit. She did not worry that he was trying to avoid discharge, though he was known to have done that in the past. She treated him without bias, without prejudice, and with skills that make her an outstanding nurse.

We can all learn something from Cassie – to never become so jaded that we forget our purpose here at SARH… to deliver EXCELLENT care. ALWAYS. To EVERY PATIENT. Cassie likely saved his life by overlooking his many previous episodes in which he “cried wolf”. She did so, despite significant pressure from many coworkers and doctors that said he was faking his symptoms. I’m so proud of her, please remind her how important what she did was. And remind all of us, why we need to listen to our patient's symptom complaints. EVERY DARN TIME.
