Nurses are often recognized for the outstanding care that they provide to their patients (as they should.) However, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Cassandra, RN, for the outstanding compassion that she provided to a patient’s family member during an emergent episode at the bedside. I responded to an RRT on C3, where the patient had just returned from a procedure and instantly began exhibiting signs and symptoms of Sepsis. As chaotic as it was in the patient’s room, Cassandra took the time to sit with his wife and help to keep her calm throughout this very stressful episode. Every time I glanced over at Cassandra and the patient’s wife, I noticed that Cassandra was right there by her side, helping her communicate over the phone with her family member(s), and at one point holding her hand while explaining what was happening with her husband. It was genuine compassion at its best! Cassandra made this unforgettable frightening event a more positive experience for not only the patient’s wife, but the rest of his family members as well.
