Demonstrates their commitment to compassionate care of patients and families:
When we asked that a nighttime nurse be replaced because her style was not best suited for my 74-year-old mother, Cassidy stepped in with empathy, excellence, and respect. She used a very calm voice and was a great listener. My mother did not want to take unnecessary meds, and she acknowledged that while making sure she understood which rounds were non-negotiable and why. I spent two nights, and she always asked if I needed anything. Before she left each day, she let my mother know there would be a new nurse coming soon, and if she was awake, she would introduce them. This was very helpful since she was having some anxiety because of a few bad experiences throughout her five-day stay.
Makes a connection with patients, families, and peers by building trust and respect:
Cassidy’s bedside manners are exceptional. Kind, personable, and understanding, that medicated and elderly patients need patience and may need a little extra help remembering and articulating their concerns. She built trust immediately by letting my mother know that she was here to make sure she was comfortable and that if we needed anything, she would be on hand to support.
Advocates for patients:
She made updates to her chart so that other nurses would not try to make her take Tylenol since she was no longer in pain and wanted to reduce the amount of meds she was taking. Cassidy is an A-type personality who works with pride and excellence, so that was perfect for my mom, who doesn’t like clutter and things out of order. Cassidy was bothered by the blankets not being neat, and she politely asked if she could help her get situated. It was funny because we were not sure if it was her or my mother.
Demonstrates exceptional skills:
The overnight nurse was unable to do a dual fluid that timeout since they could not be given simultaneously, the machine was beeping, and the cords were tangled. Cassidy came in with precision and got everything back on course seamlessly. She also changed a few things around so that my mother could get more sleep, like checking vitals while changing IV bags.
Her leadership skills and knowledge permeated every facet of our interactions with her. Cassidy was the difference in our stay at Corewell and managed my 74-year-old mother with kindness, empathy, and exceptional professionalism. The time there started with 30 excruciating hours in the ER and ended with a surgery that required a day of recovery. Thankfully, Cassidy was on our team to ensure the stay ended with success and satisfaction.
