It was a very busy day in the ED, and we all had sick patients. Cassidy was taking care of 4 patients and we had a patient that was being held in the ED for psychiatric evaluation and placement. The patient had been in the ED for several days and was growing agitated. I spoke with the patient and he wanted to take a shower. We don't have showers in the ED, but Cassidy had taken care of the patient the day before and had built a relationship with them. She called upstairs to the med/surg charge nurse and made arrangements to get the patient upstairs to take a shower. She then took the patient upstairs and helped with getting them cleaned up, clean clothes and hair washed.
Mind you this was not Cassidy's patient; this patient was being cared for by another nurse that was busy. The patient had a much better attitude and demeanor after this and told me that that was the nicest thing that anyone has done for them in a long time. Cassidy routinely goes above and beyond in her role as a nurse and a charge nurse to care for our patients in the ED.
