July 2026 Honoree
Cassidy Keeton, RN
When I learned that I would need an emergency C-section, I was immediately taken back to my previous birth experience. The fear, uncertainty, and emotions I thought I had put behind me came rushing back. Facing another surgery was difficult enough, but carrying the memories of a prior C-section made it even harder. Childbirth is one of the most vulnerable experiences a person can go through. In those moments, you are placing your trust in the people caring for you, hoping not only for safe medical care but also for understanding and reassurance. As I thought back to my previous childbirth experiences, I realized there were times when the focus seemed to be on moving through the necessary steps and procedures. While I understood the importance of protocol, I often felt like my fears and emotions were secondary to what needed to be done next. Then there was Nurse Cassidy.
From the moment she stepped into my care, she brought something that had been missing: compassion. She took the time to see me as more than a patient recovering from surgery. She saw a mother who was tired, overwhelmed, and carrying the weight of a previous experience. She offered reassurance when exhaustion took over. She spoke with kindness when I needed encouragement. She listened when I needed someone to hear me. In a situation where I often felt powerless, her presence helped me feel supported and cared for.
What I remember most is not a specific task she performed or a particular conversation we had. It was the way she made me feel. She treated me with dignity, patience, and genuine concern during one of the most important days of my life. While so much of the experience felt out of my control, she created moments of comfort amid uncertainty. Nursing requires knowledge, skill, and dedication. Many people can perform a nurse's duties well. But some nurses extend their care far beyond their job description. They leave a lasting impact because they understand that patients remember how they were treated long after they forget the details of procedures and paperwork. Nurse Cassidy is one of those nurses.
Because of her, my birth story is not just about an emergency C-section recovery. It is also about being cared for by someone who never lost sight of the human side of healthcare. Her kindness, professionalism, and unwavering compassion changed my experience in ways she may never fully realize. I will always remember the care she provided, not because it was expected, but because it was exceptional. When I needed empathy most, she showed up with it every time. That made all the difference.
