Cate wanted the best for us, and for our daughter to be the most comfortable and happy.
Our daughter, my husband, and I think Cate is most deserving of the DAISY Award, as she truly is an Extraordinary Nurse! While we hated to be in the Children’s hospital overnight, we are so grateful Cate was there to take care of our baby girl. She was admitted due to acute ITP (ironically, the diagnosis of J. Patrick Barnes, whom the DAISY Award was established in memory of) and required an IVIG infusion. Prior to the infusion, standard procedure was for her to take Tylenol and Benadryl. Being an overtired, scared little two-year-old, she refused the oral medication. Cate was so understanding, and though it cost time to order/receive the IV medications from the pharmacy, ultimately pushing the infusion start time to midnight, it didn’t faze her one bit. She wanted the best for us, and for our daughter to be the most comfortable and happy. Once starting her infusion, it was required to closely monitor L for the first hour, taking vital signs every fifteen minutes, every thirty minutes for the next two hours, followed by every hour until its completion. I was so impressed at how methodical she was. Every single move she made, starting with quietly entering the room to care for our daughter, was carefully planned out to be as efficient as possible and not startle the sleeping baby. Not only was she attentive to her patient, but she continuously informed me (mom) of what she was doing, how things were going, and what the next steps were. That, and she repeatedly asked if there was anything I needed or that she could do for me, which was a very kind gesture to a tired, worried mama. Cate is a compassionate, competent, confident nurse, which put me at ease during a time of so much uncertainty. She is a gem, a true asset to UVM Children’s Hospital.
