She worked tirelessly, making numerous calls to multiple healthcare agencies to locate a facility that could complete the necessary testing. Thanks to her persistence and determination, this patient was able to move forward with their transplant journey, ultimately receiving a life-changing kidney transplant.
I am honored to nominate Catherine “Katie” Mo for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary dedication and unwavering commitment to patient advocacy. Katie consistently goes above and beyond for her patients, ensuring that they receive the care and support they need, even when faced with obstacles.
Recently, Katie played a pivotal role in helping two patients on the deceased donor kidney transplant waitlist find opportunities to receive a living donor kidney. When one of these patients was not initially ready for transplant, Katie took it upon herself to remove every barrier in their way. She worked tirelessly, making numerous calls to multiple healthcare agencies to locate a facility that could complete the necessary testing. Thanks to her persistence and determination, this patient was able to move forward with their transplant journey, ultimately receiving a life-changing kidney transplant. The second patient also greatly benefited from Katie’s efforts and successfully underwent a living donor transplant. Her keen attention to detail and proactive approach ensured that both patients had the opportunity to receive a living donor kidney, significantly improving their quality of life.
Katie’s dedication doesn’t stop there. During a clinic visit, she identified a patient who had initially been thought to be ruled out for transplant. Recognizing an opportunity to make this patient eligible, Katie took immediate action. She collaborated closely with the medical team to facilitate additional testing for review, ensuring that every possible option was explored. This patient had traveled over four hours for their appointment, and thanks to Katie’s keen judgment and proactive approach, they were able to complete the necessary testing and cluster their medical care efficiently. Her efforts not only improved the patient’s
chances of receiving a life-changing transplant, but also saved them significant time and hardship, demonstrating her deep compassion and unwavering commitment to patient advocacy.
Katie exemplifies the very best qualities of a nurse—compassion, advocacy, and determination. She not only identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes but also takes action to make those opportunities a reality. Her efforts have made a profound difference in the lives of the patients she serves, and for that, she is truly deserving of the DAISY Award.
