I have had the pleasure of working closely with Catherine Ray for 13 years. She has continuously demonstrated excellent nursing skills, dedication, and compassion as a circulating nurse and charge nurse simultaneously. Every weekend, she holds the phone and multitasks with circulating cases, runs two rooms simultaneously with another nurse while running charge, and moves the board so patient surgery can be performed in a timely fashion. Many days, she does not receive a proper lunch because the phone is always ringing, and surgeons consistently interrupt her lunchtime. She coordinates anesthesia, blood bank, radiology, vendor trays, sales reps, scheduling of multiple cases and her staff members to a "fine tune fully operative machine" She is empathetic with the patients, listening to cultural concerns during the interview and assessment, expressing concern and care with a loved one in the plan of care. She builds a relationship through compassion and communication. While in the OR, the transaction is smooth for all patients! Always implementing safety with nursing care and education. One weekend, we experienced a homeless person requiring surgery; the patient was unruly, slightly confused, and short-tempered. He decided to just get up and leave the building. This sparked a determination in Catherine to immediately contact security and assist with locating the patient, calming him down, and explaining to the patient at their level that the surgical procedure would improve his health and relieve the pain. She and security escorted him to pre-op, where she assigned a security guard to oversee him while she quickly delegated the surgical team to execute room instrumentation and equipment set up! She advocated for this patient and served as a beacon of support for this homeless individual in the community, offering a compassionate approach that could offer a path toward dignity, improved health, and stability. The most important healing comes from simply seeing and listening to the human being beneath the circumstances. Catherine has shown an impressive ability to handle high-pressure environments efficiently and gracefully. She has a keen eye for detail while circulating, paying attention and anticipating the surgical team's needs, which vigilantly contributes to a smooth completion. C
