Compassion, caring, competence, professionalism are accurate ways to describe this nurse.
My mom was in the CCU for 14 days. She was admitted for multiple critical issues; pulmonology, cardiology, GI-anemia, ulcer, internal bleeding, and cancer. She was mom's nurse on multiple days during her stay.  This nurse went above and beyond on numerous occasions to explain doctors’ orders in plain English, answer numerous questions from my mom, sister, father, and me. With so many specialists treating my mom, there were times when we were getting conflicting information. Additionally, the doctors told us things verbally that were not recorded in the notes, and this became a point of confusion for my family.  On more than one instance she facilitated a meeting between the hospitalist and my family to clarify and reconcile these discrepancies (verbal vs written notes vs different specialists) and was proactive in this regard.

On another occasion, we were struggling to clearly comprehend the options of home health care, palliative care, and hospice and what was being recommended for Mom by the doctors and case management staff. Once again, she stepped up to facilitate meetings with these teams.

A brain MRI was ordered for my mom on about her 10th day here. She waited all day, and the transport team came to take her down late in the day. She was unable to complete the MRI due to a breathing attack in the MRI unit. This order was reissued the next day and this nurse recognized that mom had not been tested or evaluated prior to see if she could tolerate lying flat. Mom was on the wait list for MRI the next 3 days. She again facilitated orders for a nurse (her) and an RT to go with Mom to MRI when they finally came for her on the 3rd day. She said, “I'm not sending her down to MRI again without a team there to intervene if the breathing issue happens again.”

Compassion, caring, competence, professionalism are accurate ways to describe this nurse.  I believe she epitomizes the qualities that the DAISY Award was designed to honor and recognize. I wholeheartedly nominate her for this award. She is a true gem, and Advent is fortunate to have her as a nursing team member.
