My son with special needs was hospitalized with pneumonia. Cathy was the nurse on duty when we came to the floor. She was very friendly with him and made sure he understood what was going on and answered all his questions. Cathy made sure that the nurses coming on the night shift knew what was going on with him. The next day, she was his nurse again. She made sure he was comfortable, joked with him and took his concerns seriously. She really made him feel comfortable with all the treatments he received. This is how I saw all of the 6th floor staff. They did an excellent job.
What stood out most to me was not what Cathy did, but what she didn't do. When my son's IV site became painful to him, she examined it and determined a new IV was needed. She looked for a good vein. My son is very hard to find a good vein. She couldn't find one that looked like a good option. She then contacted an expert indicating he was highly experienced in this area. She did not poke and stick him numerous times before calling for an expert. She knew it would be difficult and got the assistance needed.
