Over the last nine months, my Uncle and Father have both been admitted to BN a total of ten times. We have had experiences in the ED, 4100, 4200, 5200, 5300, Endoscopy and Surgery. It has been a very stressful year for healthcare and my family. The last admission, my Dad was on 5200. Cathlene was assigned as my Dad’s nurse. Cathlene introduced herself “to him” not at him. Being very aware of his HOH, each time she entered the room she approached him. She made eye contact with him and spoke directly to him so he could understand what she was doing. He was admitted with a UTI and a fall and he was beaten and bruised. She demonstrated a sincere gentleness as she worked with him. He was experiencing significant back pain. While in the room, she placed a VOALTE message to the physician. Her follow-up was timely and he was given morphine. She returned to reassess his pain. At that point, a CT scan was ordered with an additional order for Dilaudid. She continued to monitor his status, not releasing him to go to CT until his pain was adequately managed. He was transported in his bed to “reduce one more move” for him. During these crazy pandemic times, I am sure she was very busy. When she came into his room, she never demonstrated frustration or a lack of time to care for him. While with my Dad, she was “his nurse”. I should not fail to mention that during this shift she had a transitioning student nurse with her. She was patient and thorough in her explanation and teachings. What I witnessed was an individual who loves her role and regardless of the challenges or situation, she continues to provide skilled and empathetic nursing care. I didn’t mention my Dad will be 91 in May. Cathlene kindly stated, “He will take a little more time.” She did just that. As a BN manager, I witnessed a high-performing “super human nurse”. She truly makes Trihealth great.
