,
Registered General Nurse
Intestinal Rehabilitation Unit
St. James's Hospital
Dublin
Ireland
She is a wonderful role model, teacher, and colleague. Her contribution to St James’s Hospital, the service, and most importantly, the patients is immeasurable.
Since joining the St James Hospital Intestinal Rehabilitation team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Cathy has and continues to display clinical excellence and outstanding compassionate care. She was instrumental in setting up this service for this very vulnerable cohort of patients. Her clinical knowledge and expertise were a critical element in establishing safe and efficient pathways for her patients, enabling them to access the appropriate care at the appropriate time.
She always makes herself available to her patients to ensure that they are supported and empowered to manage their own health, delivering true ‘patient-centered care.’ Similarly, her support for her colleagues is unlimited. She is always proactive in imparting her own extensive knowledge and expertise to all of the Multidisciplinary Team.
One example of this is Cathy’s approach to managing the service during her own health challenges. Cathy showed her true character and not only worked to take care of her family but set about putting in place a plan for her service and the patients under her care. Even on occasions when she was unwell, Cathy was in communication with her colleagues in the Intestinal Rehab team to ensure all of the patients were receiving the appropriate care.
She possesses, in great abundance, two of the greatest attributes of the Nurse: practicality and adaptability. For example, knowing that when she returned to work she may not be able to perform the role she carried out prior to her illness, she devised ways where she could remain adding value to the service in innovative ways. Again, another example of her selflessness and commitment to her patients.
Cathy embodies both the spirit and the tangible qualities of a DAISY Nurse. She is a consummate professional. She is compassionate. She is selfless (almost to a fault!). She is inspirational. She is a wonderful role model, teacher, and colleague. Her contribution to St James’s Hospital, the service, and most importantly, the patients is immeasurable.
I believe Cathy deserves this DAISY Award to recognise her amazing qualities and so that her kids will know that their mammy is a real Hero.
