Working in the recovery room can prove to be quite challenging much of the time. As nurses, oftentimes we don’t get the chance to develop long standing, trusting relationships with our patients’ because they come to us sedated and typically do not even remember the time that they spend with us. However, our time with them & their families is pivotal in the success of their recovery. Most pediatric patients’ come to the recovery room scared, screaming, upset and many times, in pain, the same is true for many adult patients’ as well. Patience is a virtue in each of these circumstances. For that reason, amongst others, we have collectively decided to nominate one of our excellent PACU nurses, Cathy Grant, for the DAISY Award. She has been with Henry Ford for over 30 years and her compassion has never wavered. She consistently steps up to the plate and confidently strives to meet the needs of her patients’ while never hesitating to step in to meet the needs of her co-workers’ patients’. She demonstrates compassion, quality, and effectiveness. Below are just a few examples of the many ways that she inspires her peers:
“Cathy follows the Henry Ford pillars to a tee. She is consistently flexible, a great communicator, kind, compassionate and always leaves a lasting impression.” – R M - Nurse Manager- Peri-op.
“Cathy has been instrumental in precepting so many of our staff, especially to the aspect of ambulatory surgery post-op instructions. She is always asking the question, “How is this patient going to take care of himself at home” and takes the extra step to make sure they leave confident in themselves. “It was an inspiration to watch Cathy take care of a 13 year old mentally challenged patient coming out of anesthesia. This patient woke up confused, angry, violent, kicking, screaming, punching, spiting, & thrashing. Cathy never once showed any sign of frustration. She calmly cared for the patient, re-assuring her that she would be ok. She called for the patients’ family, which was a single father, & when he came to the room she provided the most compassionate care possible. She took the time to explain to the father everything that she was going to do to care for the patient and the patient and her father left the hospital calm, comfortable and confident in their abilities to care for the patient at home. She is an asset to our department and an inspiration every day.” – K K, RN.
“From the time that I started working here at HFWB in 2009, Cathy Grant has consistently been available as an excellent resource person, team member, leader, and a great work friend. Her kindness is evident in all that she does, at work and at home. For example, Cathy’s daughter is a teacher in a poorer school system and last year, Cathy organized a collection for the students to help them through the winter as well as to give them basic school supplies.
