Cathy is known for her compassion, dependability, teamwork, integrity, and willingness to help others. Nowhere has this been on display more than one Friday night in downtown La Crosse. Cathy was celebrating her birthday with her family when she witnessed a gentleman, who was eating at the same restaurant, suddenly became unconscious. Without hesitation or concern for her own safety, Cathy determined that the man was pulseless and jumped into action by performing CPR. A third-year Mayo Family Medicine Resident, who also happened to be at the restaurant, came to aid Cathy and, by working together as a team, the gentleman was revived and was able to take a few steps to get on the ambulance stretcher.
When I learned about Cathy's heroism she tried to deflect attention and remarked: "All that matters is that the gentleman was conscious and alert when the ambulance arrived." This is just one example of Cathy's excellence and commitment to nursing. In our surgery clinic, we frequently are paired up to assist the surgeon with his/her schedule. When you are assigned to work with Cathy you can be assured that clinic charts have been thoroughly prepped and she has anticipated any need that may arise (hospital admission, pre-op, procedure in clinic, referral to other specialists, etc.) and that paperwork or room setup has been started, messages and phone calls have been returned and that she will provide compassionate care to all patients. Working with Cathy is a joy and pleasure. Her work ethic, compassion, and attention to detail make her a remarkable person and nurse.

Cathy Leibl truly lives the Mayo Clinic Value of "the needs of the patient come first". Cathy is always willing to go above and beyond to take care of not only patients and their families but her coworkers as well. She is continuously asking how she can help and what she can do to make the day better for the entire team. I was not surprised at all to hear that Cathy did not want recognition for her good deed. She is always humble and doing what she thinks is best for others, even if that means a missed lunch or leaving late herself. Cathy's compassion can be witnessed as she cares for patients on a daily basis.
