Cathy cared for a young woman who was critically ill the entire time in the ICU. She initially came in alert and oriented but went downhill quickly. Her husband was by her side night and day including many procedures and treatments. The time came when her husband struggled with the decision of bringing in their 8-year-old daughter, Cathy spent time with him and supported him with his decision to do so. When he brought her in, Cathy guided her into the room, hand in hand and explained to her on her 8-year-old level all of the things she could see and hear. When she asked if her mommy would live, Cathy hugged her, wiped away her own tears and said, "we are doing all we can for your mommy." Sadly, this patient succumbed to her illness 48 hours later. Cathy did a wonderful job with this family and should be recognized for her compassionate care.
