Imagine a 48-year-old lady burdened with cancer. She was overwhelmed with sadness and depression. After work, this nurse purchased scarves that she felt she would like. The next morning, the nurse shaved what remained of the patient’s hair and placed one of the scarves on her head. I had not witnessed a smile on the patient’s face until that moment. The patient advised me that it was the first time in quite a while that she felt like a person again. This nurse’s compassion helped to lessen the suffering the patient had been experiencing. Three days later, the patient succumbed to her cancer. I will always remember this nurse’s small act of kindness that put a smile on the patient’s face.
