One patient's wish was honored before leaving the hospital.
This patient was an elderly gentleman who was being discharged to hospice care to a long-term care facility. A patient in CDU informed his nurse Linda that he wished to be baptized before leaving the hospital since he would not return home. Linda in turn contacted Melissa, the Nurse Manager, about the patient's wish. Melissa and her assistant nurse managers, Devon, Alisha, and Suzanne, started working together to make this wish come true the next day.
With creative thinking and planning, they were able to grant his wish. The birthing pool was brought to the ER and placed in the room for the baptism to take place. The patient's immediate family and Pastor, who performed the baptism, were also present to witness the acceptance of Christ. This patient was able to give his life to Christ before leaving the hospital.
Linda, Melissa, and Suzanne put the plan in action while many others stood by to assist when or if needed; including Plant Engineering Services and Labor and Delivery. In order to provide safety to the patient, Suzanne came in on her day off to stand in the pool while the baptism took place with Mike and Adrien standing by in case extra hands and muscles were needed to help the patient out of the water.
