I am a middle-aged man coming to short-stay surgery for an outpatient procedure. I had never before had an IV, nor surgery. I was very frightened and apprehensive. When I arrived at preop, I was treated well by all registration and admitting staff. Celeste was to be my preop RN that day and would be the one to place my IV. My experience with medical staff and IVs was that they were always painful, and my veins were not easy to access. Celeste took the time to explain the process, numb the area before starting the IV, and easily completed this procedure. She even took consideration to cover the area so I would not have to see it. Because of Celeste's care and communication, the entire process was so much more comfortable. I could now face surgery! This might not be a big deal to anyone else, but to me it was the biggest fear that I faced and overcame, all thanks to an exceptional nurse, just doing what she had done for years.
