The patient stated she believed this nurse saved her from a fall and maybe more.
This patient presented to the Emergency Department with complaints of neck pain and dizziness. After several diagnostic tests were completed with nothing found, the patient was going to be discharged home to follow up with her primary care physician. However, the patient was still having dizziness and was very unsteady when attempting to stand. So, this nurse said, let me try one more thing. She completed orthostatic vital signs on the patient and found a significant drop in the patient’s blood pressure when standing. The patient agreed to be admitted to the hospital for further testing and follow-up. The patient stated she believed this nurse saved her from a fall and maybe more.
Celia demonstrates a consistently positive attitude every day in the Emergency Department at Medical Center South. She routinely gets positive comments and feedback from patient surveys and is seen by her peers as a true team player. She serves as a great resource for other team members and even served as a COVID vaccinator in the drive-through clinic. For this patient, she probably thought she was just ‘doing her job’ but her diligence in listening to the concerns of the patient and using her critical thinking skills kept this patient from experiencing not only frustration for not knowing what was wrong, but also most likely kept the patient from further harm.
