Chad was the triage nurse in the ED; he came into the room where I was sitting in a wheelchair. He pulled a chair up and sat across from me and stated, "can you rate your pain from 1-10?" I gave him my pain score. He proceeded in the kindest and compassionate soft-spoken voice to ask me why I came to the ER. He took all the information and was typing in the computer with frequent eye contact and asking on a regular basis "are you doing ok?" When Chad was leaving the room, he shared he was not my nurse that another nurse would be taking care of me. Chad returned to my room with supplies in hand. He again sat down and asked if it was ok for him taking care of me. I said yes. Chad sat down again. He said I know I told you I am not your nurse; I am helping out so we can help you with your pain. I am going to place an IV in your arm. You will feel a pick now. There was no pain from the IV being inserted. Chad explained the bag he was hanging did not have any medication in it, so I was not to expect any pain relief at that time. Chad checked on me throughout my ED stay. He was kind and compassionate with his words. He was extremely respectful, sharing and explaining every time he asked a question or provided care. He was very reassuring and caring. He checked on me one last time as I was getting ready to go home. He met my husband and was once again very respectful by shaking his hand. Speaking of hands, he cleaned his hands before caring for me and before leaving the room. Chad was a true reflection of someone who is empathetic, caring and professional.
