May 2026 Honoree
Chantal Calderon, BSN,RN,
I had a nurse on day shift who gave me medication that I had specifically told him I did not want or need. As a result, my blood pressure dropped significantly. I had also requested pain medication from him, but after waiting more than two hours, it was never brought to me. Altogether, these events caused a major setback in my recovery and left me feeling frightened and frustrated.
When shift change finally came, Chantal walked into my room. The first words out of my mouth were, "Oh, thank God." She had cared for me before, and I knew immediately that I was in good hands. I felt an overwhelming sense of relief knowing she would be my nurse again.
Chantal and my nursing assistant carefully monitored my blood pressure throughout the night, making sure I remained safe as it gradually stabilized. She also got me back on my pain medication schedule, bringing my pain under control after hours of unnecessary discomfort. She checked on me frequently, never making me feel forgotten, and consistently made sure all of my needs were being met.
What stood out most was the genuine compassion she showed. She was thorough, caring, understanding, and went above and beyond to ensure I felt safe and supported. Low blood pressure can be frightening, and although it was one of the hardest nights of my hospital stay, Chantal made it bearable through her calm presence and exceptional care.
Thanks to her attentiveness, clinical judgment, and kindness, we made it through that difficult night together. I will always be grateful for the care she provided. Nurses like Chantal are truly rare, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award.
