Charlene is a positive role model who willingly acts as a patient advocate. One day there were several patients who were being held for hours in the PACU waiting for bed availability on the 8th floor. Charlene was rounding on the family members waiting in the 2nd floor surgical reception area. One patient's spouse was upset that the surgeon had not spoken to her after the surgery. She had seen him talk with other families and felt that she was purposely omitted. Charlene reassured her and immediately contacted the surgeon who then reached out to the family. To make sure the rest of the hospitalization was going well, Charlene made a follow up visit to the patient's hospital room the next day. The patient had a revision joint replacement surgery and had a question regarding his removed hardware and asked if he could have it. She let him know he could not have his hardware, but she found his hardware, bagged it up, and took it to his room to show him. She also took the teaching hip model to show him how the prosthesis fits into the bone. She personally took an emotionally charged situation and through compassionate and empathetic care was able to reassure the patient and his wife.
