Charles took extra time to explain answers to the patient and family and give his concerns. He was knowledgeable and calming when doing so. Everyone was great, but Charles stood out when on duty. He also let us know when he did not have an answer and would get one for us. We looked for him.

It is hard to pinpoint any one "specific situation" for the admiration and respect we have for Charlie. We have spent a considerable amount of time on 8 North over the past 5 months. Because Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer is in itself a difficult situation for any family, we have felt very fortunate to have the incredible care that 8 North provides. The entire staff is exceptional - but in our opinion, one nurse stands out because of the care and compassion he has shown my husband (patient), me and our family. Charlie has been our nurse many days in the several weeks he has been in the hospital on 8N. One evening after I left for Hope Lodge, Charlie came into my husband's room and talked for a while. My husband said after Charlie left he felt "at peace". He felt that having a nurse show that kind of concern "from the heart" was a blessing.
The next hospital stay when Charlie wasn't my husband's nurse he popped his head in to see how we were doing.
Most recently when my husband came in with a high fever and feeling pretty "down", the ER nurse said she had just called up to Oncology and that our nurse that day would be Charlie. I saw a big smile on my husband's face (first of the day). During this stay, we have seen so much more in this young man as he has shown not only compassion for my husband and our family, but we have seen his incredible skill as a nurse, the respect he has from other nurses and that he takes his "job" very seriously.
Two days ago, we learned that my husband only has a few months left. We found this out after Charlie had left for the day. The next morning before I got to the hospital my husband told Charlie what we learned. With tears in his eyes, he told me later that Charlie "truly listened" as he shared some of his concerns. Who could ask for a better nurse?
Our family will be forever grateful for a young man who was always professional, compassionate, encouraging and showed the CARE that every family going through something this difficult needs!
