Charlotte Brizo, BSN, RN

Charlotte Brizo is an Extraordinary Nurse who ALWAYS puts our patients first in all that she does. I would like to recognize Charlotte for her continuous commitment to patient safety and, foremost, for preventing a retained foreign body in a surgical patient. Charlotte was functioning in an RN Circulator role while caring for her surgical patient. During closing counts, a count discrepancy was identified. The surgical team carried out steps to locate the missing item, an instrument called a "bulldog", in accordance with the Count Procedure: Prevention of Retained Foreign Body policy. An X-ray was taken, and no foreign body was seen. Charlotte went above and beyond and reviewed the X-ray report, identifying that the X-ray did not encompass the entire operative field. X-ray was retaken, and the missing instrument was found in the patient's chest. Charlotte prevented a retained foreign body!
