I am a registered nurse on the fourth floor and recently cared for a veteran who was experiencing suicidal thoughts. The situation quickly became very distressing for the patient, requiring one-to-one supervision to ensure his safety. Without hesitation, Charlotte volunteered to sit with him, and the care I saw her provide was truly extraordinary.

Charlotte approached the veteran with remarkable compassion and patience. She played calming music and gently rubbed his back to provide comfort. She engaged him in conversations about the things he enjoyed, offering meaningful distraction from his distress. She also attended to his physical needs, providing ChapStick, mouth swabs, moisturizing his mouth, and even bathing him the following morning. Her thoughtful actions provided both reassurance and dignity to the veteran during an incredibly difficult time.

What stood out most was Charlotte's unwavering dedication. She volunteered to stay an additional four hours beyond her scheduled shift, ensuring the veteran remained safe and calm. Her kind words and gentle presence had an immediate, calming effect, and I was in awe of her ability to de-escalate the situation with such grace. I can say with complete sincerity that I could not have made it through that night without her. Charlotte demonstrated the very essence of compassionate nursing, providing not only safety but also comfort, dignity, and genuine human connection. She is a true example of the impact one nurse’s care can have, both on a patient’s well-being and on the colleagues who work alongside her.

Thank you, Charlotte, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
