The COVID pandemic has gravely impacted family visitation with patients. In the ICU, patient instability creates added stress on family members. One day, the nominee advocated for the ability of the patient's family to be able to come to see the patient prior to their transfer, as they were not previously allowed to see the patient due to visitor restrictions. The nominee escalated concerns and collaborated with leadership and infection prevention to remove the patient from isolation precautions. Due to the transfer, the timing for visitation initially wasn't feasible. However, the transport team was delayed. The nominee called the patient's family to come into the hospital to see the patient. When the patient's family arrived, they were in tears of joy to be able to see the patient! The family shared how appreciative they were to be able to see the patient before they were transferred to a hospital further away. The nominee went above and beyond to advocate for the patient's family to be able to see the patient for the first time in three weeks. The care and compassion demonstrated by this nurse exemplify the qualities of an exceptional nurse!
