She was kind, talked to her, listened to her, and never once treated her differently because of her weight. She led the entire team that worked on her and never once gave any indication that this was more than the average patient.
My sister is morbidly obese, weighing 600 lbs. on a 5'6" frame. She is 55 years old and has been obese her entire life. Over the years, I have witnessed many health professionals unable to look past her size at any other health concern she has, and many treat her rudely because of it. Or they are kind to her face, but there are comments and looks between the health professionals caring for her. And I understand, she cannot move on her own, she has numerous wounds over her body from sitting all day for years, and her body odor is strong. She is not an easy patient. When we came into the ER, Chelsea treated her like a person. She was kind, talked to her, listened to her, and never once treated her differently because of her weight. She led the entire team that worked on her and never once gave any indication that this was more than the average patient. That sounds like such a little thing, but having been at dr appts and hospitals visits with my sister over the last 30 years, you would be surprised at how often that is not the case. They speak like she is not in the room and cannot hear her like she does not have feelings, and that since many of her issues are brought on by her own hand, their time is wasted on helping her. Chelsea never made her (us) feel that way. Her professionalism and patient care were the best I have witnessed in all the time I have been there for my sister. Often, when the caregivers make my sister feel bad and that she is putting them out by caring for her, she just wants to go home, and we cannot get the medical care she needs. I cannot thank Chelsea enough.
