I was recently hospitalized for four days following gallbladder surgery. During that time, I had the privilege of witnessing an extraordinary nurse, even though I was not her assigned patient. She was caring for my roommate, who was experiencing significant discomfort and uncertainty. Despite multiple evaluations, the cause of his symptoms remained unclear. He had been told he had mild pancreatitis, but his condition evolved, he developed a rash that progressed into hives. Naturally, he became increasingly frustrated and anxious, especially as plans were being made to discharge him with outpatient follow-up.

His nurse never accepted that as “good enough.” She remained fully engaged, attentive, and curious. She listened to her patient, observed closely, and most importantly, she advocated. She took the initiative to research possible causes for his symptoms and suspected that Norco could be the source of the reaction. She brought this forward to the physician, who listened, reconsidered the plan, and ultimately held the discharge. This nurse was right, the reaction was due to the Norco. Her persistence and critical thinking directly impacted her patient’s safety and outcome.

She did not allow him to be dismissed or overlooked, and she stood by him every step of the way. What also stood out to me on a personal level was that although I was not her patient, she never entered or left the room without checking on me as well. She acknowledged me, made sure I was okay, and treated me with the same kindness and respect. As a nurse myself, I recognize how rare and valuable this level of advocacy, awareness, and compassion truly is. This nurse exemplifies what it means to be an exceptional nurse!
