We were blessed to add a baby girl to our family. After delivery, we moved upstairs. Mom is a L&D nurse herself and Dad is a Physician. Being on night shift with parents with medical backgrounds, our nurse Chelsea could have easily imagined an easy night ahead, especially with report of successful breastfeeding and uneventful pregnancy. Around 9 am our baby was taken for a routine hearing screening; she was apparently too fussy to complete it. Instead of just trying another time Chelsea took her to the nursery to investigate this. She found concerning skin findings and alerted NICU. Our baby was transferred and had a rapid extensive workup which we feel saved her life and gave her the best chance at a successful recovery and long and healthy life. We undoubtedly have a long road ahead but could only imagine how much worse our baby’s illness would have been if care was delayed. Chelsea embodies what the DAISY Award is. She was so kind and loving towards us doing such a difficult time. She used her nursing skills to rapidly identify our baby was sick. She listened to her gut and got help quickly.
