I had the misfortune of being ill enough to visit the Emergency Department after 10 pm on a holiday. During my stay, I saw a teenager with bright pink hair and bare feet refuse to stay in her room. Patients waiting were yelling at the Care Guides about their wait and because taxi cabs were late to pick them up. A patient who had soiled her pants refused to sit in a wheelchair but instead sat in multiple waiting room chairs. A mother with four young boys asked for graham crackers four times and then complained that they were not fresh enough. She also talked on her cell phone on speakerphone, on the highest volume.
I only tell you these details because the word "chaos" is not adequate!
I was brought back to a bay and could immediately hear the patient next door cursing and yelling to a nurse. The nurse kept reassuring this patient, who was in a holding room, as there were no beds upstairs. She would make sure this patient would get a good night's sleep. This went on for ten minutes. The curtain opens and in walks Chelsea. I immediately recognized her voice as the nurse next door. She was the picture of professionalism. Her hair was neatly braided out of her face, her scrubs were clean and crisp, and she had the sweetest smile on her face.
She introduced herself, apologized for our wait, and gave me a care plan with a time frame. She was stepping out to gather supplies as the patient's husband from next door stopped her. Again, the verbal assault went on with Chelsea listening and reassuring. She came back in with the same smile, and expertly started my IV and delivered my meds after educating me thoroughly. She never let on what was happening next door. I am amazed at the care I received! She went above and beyond for me. She went over my discharge paperwork, answering my questions thoroughly.
I don't know how she did it. She is a perfect example of the mission and values of Palmetto Health! She deserves this DAISY Award for the professionalism she displays while delivering expert care in a chaotic environment.
