She demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and truly excels in her role.
My brother was seen in the emergency department in March, more ill than anticipated. He has been treated multiple times for the same issue, which stems from a substance use disorder. Many people might consider his condition to be self-induced, and I can’t entirely disagree with that perspective. However, this often leads to interactions with medical staff that seem rooted in disapproval, disgust, and a lack of empathy.
Chelsea, although not my brother’s originally assigned nurse, provided him with outstanding care. She came to his room and successfully started a second IV, which he desperately needed after another nurse had given up on the attempt. She frequently checked in on him, not only delivering medications but also offering emotional support and comfort. She brought him cold washcloths for his forehead, ice packs, and warm blankets. She stood by his side with an emesis bag while he repeatedly vomited, followed by offering water to rinse his mouth.
Not only was she attentive to my brother, but she was also considerate of our family, offering water, blankets, and frequent updates about his care plan. She did all of this without any hint of annoyance or judgment, making it clear that she genuinely wanted to help. As a nurse myself, I know that providing this level of service is not always easy. My brother may have been undeserving of the exceptional care she offered, yet she provided it wholeheartedly.
Throughout numerous visits to the emergency department and inpatient hospitalizations over the years, we have never encountered such compassionate care. While the DAISY Award alone does not seem like sufficient recognition for Chelsea, I believe it could serve as a small token of our gratitude. She demonstrates a strong commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and truly excels in her role.
