Chelsey works as a staff nurse and charge nurse in the Emergency Department on night shift. She works very hard to consistently give assistance where and when needed, even if it is outside of the ED walls. On one particularly busy night for both the ED and the OR, the OR staff had a pediatric patient that declined during a surgical procedure and a code was called. After successful resuscitation of the patient, the PACU staff then had to not only medically manage, but also transfer the patient. Because PACU does not normally transfer patients outside the facility, they were unaware of how to manage the process. Despite the fact that the ED was busy and had been preparing for a possible pediatric code to arrive via EMS, Chelsey did not hesitate to assist the PACU staff to work through the multiple details of a transfer, the medical management of the patient, and the EMTALA form. Then, because both departments had been overwhelmed and stressed, Chelsey ordered pizza for all of them.
