Chelsie worked with this patient and ensured that he had positive interactions with staff. She got him toys, colors, and coloring pages, played with him, and took him out on wagon rides.
Chelsie started at Children's on 6MS in the fall of 2022. I had the pleasure of being one of her preceptors and her dedication to learning and advocating for our patients has been exceptional right from the beginning. We have had a patient here on the floor for a little while and he was fearful of staff each time they came in the room as he had associated staff with either being poked for lab draws or new IVs, even blood pressures caused anxiety for this patient. Chelsie worked with this patient and ensured that he had positive interactions with staff. She got him toys, colors, and coloring pages, played with him, and took him out on wagon rides. She would sit in his room and rock him when he was upset to help soothe him when he was upset. She has gone beyond having Child Life stop and see him by not just seeing him as a patient but as a small child who wants some kind of interaction from those who are caring for him. She has advocated for him to ensure that he is getting the things that he needs from his medical team while he has been here at Children's. Now this patient readily goes to Chelsie and doesn't cry at the sight of new staff coming into the room for vitals or giving medication. Hearing him laugh rather than cry and the changes that Chelsie has brought out in him is truly inspirational and should be something that everyone should work towards in caring for our patients here at Children's. This patient is just one of the reasons why I think Chelsie is a DAISY Nurse. She ensures that all of her patients and in each patient room she enters the patients and families are treated with respect, inclusivity, and caring. She is the type of nurse I would most definitely want caring for any of my loved ones.
