Chere was assigned as my primary nurse for six nights. Her demeanor, compassion, and judgment exceeded the standard demonstrated by her colleagues. The underlying medical condition, which required my hospitalization, was not readily evident upon my admission and subsequently required various procedures, including a needle biopsy, which was sent to another hospital for analysis.

During that process, she assisted as the intermediary between me and the off-site consulting physician’s daily virtual computer visits. Her participation and explanations were particularly helpful due to my hearing impairment. In addition, her professional ability to address my intimate medical needs put me at ease while avoiding what would otherwise be embarrassing circumstances in a non-hospital setting.

Of greatest note, however, was her tenderness when my levels of pain were more than uncomfortable. Even now, I vividly recall the comfort she provided by holding my hand through my distress. In our day and age, the phrase “Tender Loving Care” has been overworn. It was a blessing for me to have been the beneficiary of such care and to learn its true meaning anew.

In sum, the education, training, and skill she demonstrated in my care were of such a degree that she is truly a DAISY Award Honoree.
