Cherie A. Neil, MSN, RN, PCCN-K, NEA-BC
Under Cherie's leadership, the Cardiothoracic Telemetry unit has successfully implemented the bedside handover process, launched the dual-nurse sepsis screening practice, and led many collaborative efforts between disciplines, such as care coordination to create a post-surgical telehealth program and with ISS in the development of the Lead Nurse Quality Indicator Tool (LNQIT). She has also positively influenced nursing practice through leading the nursing Medication Safety Committee and being involved in the UCLA Health Nursing Professional Governance structure as a Unit Director mentor. She is a firm believer in developing staff and helping others realize their full potential. "What are your goals, and how can I help you to pursue them?" is a common question you hear from her, and it is not limited to only at times of performance evaluation. Cherie has reinforced a culture within the unit where nurses are encouraged and supported to pursue specialty certification and higher education. Our unit's certification rate consistently outperforms the national benchmark and ranks among the highest among the Adult Telemetry units within the organization. She routinely takes time to sit down for a one-on-one with nurses to go through the clinical ladder and discuss how to advance their careers. Her persistent work in staff professional development has definitely made a positive impact on patient outcomes in her unit. Additionally, under her tenure the unit received the Gold Beacon Designation for nursing excellence, awarded by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
