Cheri noticed his address and that he lived close to her. So, she volunteered to stop by and make checks on him during her off time, with no compensation.
In recent weeks, I was caring for a young male teen with significant wounds. His family was very supportive, and they, along with the patient, were such a joy to work with and so appreciative of all care.
At the time of discharge, his wounds still needed a lot of care, and the family was willing to do whatever they could, but he really needed ongoing attention. However, his insurance had not been approved as of that time, and his mom was working. No home health could be arranged.

This made me, as the wound nurse, much more at ease, not to mention the family. The patient and the family were so grateful. Cherie keeps me in the loop of needs for the patient who is followed in surgical services weekly. There is no doubt in my mind that without her kindness and willingness to help, he would not be healing as well. Her support has made him, being at home with a wound, so much easier on the family, knowing they are doing the right thing and he is getting better. We need many more compassionate nurses like Cherie.
Whenever there is a patient with a serious wound, Cherie is in the room with me, whether it is her patient or not, trying to learn the best care. She is an excellent patient advocate, and I highly recommend her for this award.
