Cheryl went to be with the wife and comfort her. Cheryl made a connection with this patient's family, which went above and beyond her expected duties in the EC.
The EC had a visitor collapse and subsequently go into cardiac arrest. While staff took care of the visitor, now patient, Cheryl took time to sit with his wife, who was to be admitted to the hospital. Cheryl provided comfort to her and kept her updated on his status while in the EC. As it turns out, the couple has no family that lives within the state. After both were admitted, Cheryl took time out of her day to visit with the wife in her room on multiple occasions. She checked on the wife after her procedure and provided a significant amount of emotional support. Cheryl also took the time to go visit the patient in the ICU and updated the wife on her husband. She helped explain medical jargon to her and patiently answered her questions and their daughter's questions once she arrived. She ensured the wife had basic needs met until extended family could arrive from out of state.
When the wife told Cheryl she just wanted to brush her teeth, Cheryl could have gone to the floor's supply room and grab a hospital toothbrush, but she chose not to. Instead, she went to the gift shop and not only bought her a toothbrush but other basic toiletries and books to keep her occupied.
When the wife and family made the difficult decision to place the patient on comfort care and allow him to pass peacefully, Cheryl went to be with the wife and comfort her. Cheryl made a connection with this patient's family, which went above and beyond her expected duties in the EC. She exemplified UMC's culture by showing compassion to a family in crisis and offering support during an extremely difficult time.
