I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August, 6 months after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. That time in a person's life is emotionally and physically trying even without a cancer diagnosis. After weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments it was decided that I should have a hysterectomy. In November I had the surgery and found myself on the women's surgical floor. The care I received during that post-op time was impeccable. One of my nurses was Chi Glass. Chi was energetic, supportive and encouraging during my hospital stay. Her outgoing personality really made me feel comfortable during that very emotionally draining time - I felt not just cared for, but cared about. Her attitude was positive and her encouragement made me feel, for the first time in a long time, that I could do this and it was all going to be okay.
A week after my discharge I was readmitted to the hospital with serious internal bleeding. The complications I had were unheard of at that point in my post-op recovery. I was blessed to end up back on the women's floor and even more blessed to learn that Chi was once again to be my nurse. My first day back in the hospital was chaotic. While my fantastic team of doctors and residents scrambled to figure out what was the next step for me, Chi was in my room bringing a calm to the storm.
She quickly got up-to-speed on my situation then made my comfort and care her top priority. Her professionalism during that time was a relief to me and my family - even going so far as to call in the rapid response team to get a 2nd set of eyes on my case, so she would know that she was doing everything that she possibly could for me. In addition to making sure my quality of care was the best it could be, she remembered my family from my prior stay and was chatting with all of us like we were old friends. The comfort that comes to a patient's family through a friendly face in a time of crisis cannot be measured. It is for all of these reasons that Chi Glass deserves to be recognized as a DAISY Award recipient. Mission Hospital is lucky to have such a wonderful nurse as a part of their team.
Second nomination:
Chi Glass delivered excellent care showing great compassion and attention to detail. For example, I needed an episiotomy for my hysterectomy and she suggested and provided a cold pack for the discomfort, a little detail that made a huge difference. She stood by me during my early ambulation and was supportive, nurturing and encouraging. In doing this she facilitated making me feel secure enough to know my departure was going to be successful. She gave me the confidence I needed to go home with sound mind. She made my family and me feel very comfortable and at ease by taking her time and treating me like I was her only patient. For these reasons she is most certainly deserving of the DAISY award.
