You can prepare the physical aspects for what’s about to become reality, but emotionally, it was a whirlwind, and she was a support we never knew we needed or saw coming.
Our family is a heart-string family, and we were there for the birth of our daughter, who was going to gain her angel wings shortly after birth. We came with a detailed birth and care plan because of this and didn’t want to miss a single moment, as this was our only time with her physically on this earth. Chloe respected our wishes with grace. Her bedside manner was unparalleled; nursing is not just a job to her, and it was exemplified that day. She gave us time when we needed it and asked other staff to be patient. She offered comfort and genuinely cried with us at times. You can prepare the physical aspects for what’s about to become reality, but emotionally, it was a whirlwind, and she was a support we never knew we needed or saw coming. I asked her to be in the OR with us, as she was a familiar warm face, and I emotionally needed that; she didn’t hesitate, even knowing it would be very somber and not a typical birth ending, which can be taxing even on a seasoned nurse. She continued to be that warm face, popping in and conducting all the necessary postpartum checks, ensuring I wasn’t up and running just yet, even though she knew I wanted to be. Even on one of the worst days for a labor and delivery nurse, she made it comforting for the family experiencing their worst nightmare: losing their newborn daughter.
