Chris stood out with his care, compassion, and ability to adjust to the unique needs of our daughter and myself and the COVID world we live in.
Our daughter has a rare autoimmune disorder called Jobs Syndrome. She started her hospitalization in Spokane Washington, moved to Vancouver Washington, and was subsequently transferred to the University of Washington Medical Center. Nearly 1.5 months into her stay at UW Medical Center, her condition deteriorated and she had to be transferred to ICU and placed on a ventilator. It was at this point she was put into the care of highly competent nursing staff. Chris Crabtree stood out with his care, compassion, and ability to adjust to the unique needs of our daughter and myself and the COVID world we live in. Once our daughter was placed onto the ventilator, she was a unicorn of patients and was awake and interactive with me as well as the staff.
Chris did a terrific job in gaining K's trust and quickly adapted to her needs when it came to the pain and anxiety she was experiencing with the intubation tube and the serious nature of her condition, and she responded well to him. His years of experience really did show in being proactive to her unique needs and learning her nonverbal communication.
He also showed a lot of compassion with me as the family that was with her 24/7 due to COVID rules. He helped ease my anxieties with our daughter being on life support by being thorough on what patients experience and by finding subjects we had in common and could talk about other than medical talk. I found that Chris really likes what he does and wasn't callous like some nursing staff are when they have worked positions so long. I also saw his interactions with medical rounds in the morning being thorough on our daughter's information and making recommendations for adjustments based on his observations and communications with my daughter and myself.
Having many years of experience in hospital life, the COVID world has thrown complexity into the rooms with patients and their caregivers. Advocating for patients has been lost for many staff, but Chris was there to make sure our daughter’s best interests were met. For all of this, my daughter and I would like to recognize Chris.
