You may hear the strum of a guitar down the hall and find Chris sitting bedside with the patient, shutting out the reality of being admitted to the hospital, and having a little jam sesh. He takes time to be someone's friend when they need it the most.
At my apartment complex, I have a small pond where the geese and ducks gather. As the eggs begin to hatch in the Spring, the protective nature of the Geese (especially) ramp up. The "Pappa" goose is always easy to spot and even more entertaining to watch as unsuspecting residents on their morning walk find themselves being hissed at and chased down the path for getting "too close" to the babies or making eye contact with Pappa. PCU is fortunate to have our own protective "Pappa Goose", who thank goodness, doesn't hiss or chase people... to that extent anyway...

This award nomination is long overdo and I'm not entirely sure where to start... Chris Patterson embodies everything that The DAISY Award represents: kindness, compassion, advocacy, and the ability to connect to people on a very human level even on their worst days.

Chris refers to all of his patients as his "angels." This simple, silly, but heartfelt gesture truly speaks volumes to the level of care and compassion he provides to each patient, no matter their condition or circumstance. In fact, he somehow manages to wrangle the most "difficult personalities" to find boundaries, common ground, and mutual respect.

On any given Friday - Monday you may hear the strum of a guitar down the hall and find Chris sitting bedside with the patient, shutting out the reality of being admitted to the hospital, and having a little jam sesh. He takes time to be someone's friend when they need it the most.  And all of the charge nurses know to give Pappa Goose ALL of his patients back ALWAYS.

His protective nature doesn't stop at his patients. Chris will always have the backs of the team. On several occasions he has stepped in on tense or threatening situations and deescalated and/or prevented a Code BERT.

When Chris is on shift, meal trays get delivered to isolation rooms promptly, the hallways are free from clutter and beds, scrubs are restocked in the cabinet, Nursing Leadership Rounding is boosted, amongst SO many other things.

Chris "Pappa" Patterson is the kind of nurse who goes far beyond standard expectations. He blends nursing excellence, human kindness, and a down-to-earth sense of humor in a way that completely transforms the experience of care. For all these reasons and so more, I believe he is incredibly deserving of the DAISY Award. And a midday snack :)

***

It is my honor to nominate Chris Patterson for the DAISY Award. Chris continually strives to deliver compassionate care to his patients, embodying the true spirit of our mission which states above all else we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. His love for guitars and rock and roll music creates a special bond with the patients he serves; he often brings his guitar to work and plays soothing tunes whenever time permits.

Chris also goes out of his way to brighten the days of our cafeteria employees by randomly bringing them flowers, showing his genuine appreciation for their hard work.

He champions patient rounding on the unit, connecting with patients and their families to gather valuable feedback about their care experience.

His dedication to maintaining a clean and tidy unit is unmatched. Chris routinely moves beds and equipment to ensure our hallways look inviting and organized. He has earned recognition from the EVS staff for stepping in to assist with nursing tasks, making their jobs easier and fostering a spirit of teamwork.

Always on the go, Chris exemplifies the energy and commitment we strive for in our work. For these reasons, I wholeheartedly support his nomination for the DAISY Award. His compassion and dedication truly make a difference in our hospital.
