I trusted Chris with my son's life when he was under Chris' care. And for anyone that knows me, I don't say that about many people. Chris was the nurse that admitted my son the morning before. We had been admitted at 3 in the morning after an eventful previous few days throughout the UW system. The morning we were admitted Chris spent time with my son and I bedside getting to know my son as a person, and me as a parent. He made me feel like my son was a priority. I trusted him, and knew no matter what happened, he would always put my son first. He was wonderful at listening and was a patient and family advocate like no other. Chris returned the following night. I recognized that I was in a desperate need of some sleep. When I had learned that Chris would be our nurse again, I felt comfortable making plans for my husband to stay overnight. I was able to do this because I trusted him and I was comfortable with him. I entrusted my son's life in his hands. He came in the room with the day shift nurse, completed bedside report and introduced himself to my husband. I learned that he was not only caring for my son, but he was also the nurse for a second patient. And he was the charge nurse. While we were discussing my son's care for the evening, we were interrupted a dozen times with phone calls, messages and questions all for Chris in the mere 10 minutes we were talking about the plan of care for the evening. Before he even stepped out of the room a colleague of his told him he needed to take a third patient till another nurse was able to get to the hospital so the day shift nurse could leave. I was frightened to the core to know that the nurse that was caring for my son was staffing nearly half of the unit as well as the charge nurse for the evening. But I was still able to leave, why? Because Chris was the nurse. He promised me he would not let anything happen to my son that night and I believed him. And that's exactly what he did.
