He also presented the patient with a “cake” and a bunch of goodies from Market C as a birthday treat. The patient was overjoyed and could not stop smiling.
This individual is by far the most empathetic, caring nurse I have ever come across. No matter how busy he may be during his shift, he never forgets to show his patients compassion. Whether it is sitting with a patient holding their hand in a time of need-especially during COVID when patients could not be with loved ones, listening to them when they need someone to talk to, deeply educating each patient on their plan of care, or giving a full bed bath to a patient before bed to provide comfort, he will never put his “to-do” list before patient care. Not only is he an amazing caretaker, but he also goes out of his way to help each of his co-workers. Don’t even mention a bed alarm going off, he could be on the whole opposite side of the floor but quits everything he is doing to sprint to the patient’s room to prevent a fall.
Despite all these wonderful things, a very special moment comes to mind when thinking of him. One night he gathered about five other nurses and sang Happy Birthday to a patient who was turning 50 at midnight. He also presented the patient with a “cake” and a bunch of goodies from Market C as a birthday treat. The patient was overjoyed and could not stop smiling. The patient thanked us all from the bottom of his heart, especially Chris for providing him such great care.
Chris is extraordinary. Even though I am a nurse leader in the Clinical Coordinator role and have been practicing as an RN for five years now, I find myself learning so much from him. The biggest thing I have learned from him is how to slow down and take the time to go the extra mile for each patient. He reminds me that the paperwork can wait. These patients need us fully present in their time of need, and that is exactly how Chris practices nursing each shift. Thank you for all the hard work you do Chris. Each patient lucky enough to have been in your care has been in the most caring hands I know.
